With a nasty villain and a plot twist that surprised many viewers, derailed is the kind of potboiler that the fun despite its shortcomings. It is basically two-thirds of a good film, with a convincing structure and hardly plausible that the payout ... Well, you've just got to see and decide for themselves. Like Fatal Attraction, it is a good enough thriller that every man in the nightmare of infidelity, beginning when Charles (Clive Owen), a well-to-do Chicago advertising director with a sickly, diabetic daughter and a slightly troubled marriage, has a chance encounter with Lucinda (Jennifer Aniston), a beautiful and fast quick-witted adviser, who is also stuck in a marriage Ruth. Their chemistry is instant (between both characters and stars), but their eventual hotel tryst is powered by a mugger (French actor Vincent Cassel in his vile, despicable at best), the milk Charles for every dollar he is. Of course, a call to the police would solve all Problems, but how he and collateral (albeit more convincingly), screenwriter Stuart Beattie is the tension with such manipulative skill that you are willing to skate past the plot holes and go for the ride. With support from the lively performances by rappers Xzibit and RZA, derailed is a commercial smooth American debut for Swedish director Mikael Håfström, whose thriller Evil In 2003, a Best Foreign Film Oscar ® Nominee. - Jeff Shannon
