Old pro Shirley MacLaine steals her every scene in Rumor Has It ..., a very strange comedy conceived by Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally ..., The Princess Bride). Sarah (Jennifer Aniston, The Good Girl) comes to the wedding of her sister with her fiancé Jeff (Mark Ruffalo, 13 Going on 30). She is already feeling anxiety-ridden about her impending wedding, if it collects some odd hints from her grandmother Katherine (MacLaine, The Apartment, Terms of tenderness) that her family was the basis for the film The Graduate. Faster that you can say "Mrs. Robinson" she slips away from Jeff to investigate the suspicion that the type character on Dustin Hoffman - Beau Burroughs (Kevin Costner, Tin Cup) - may be her real father and ... , And from there the plot takes some twists, but that's not a film succeeds in that, on the basis of their history (which never really convincing). Instead, Rumor Has It ... based on the surprisingly complex and mature emotional interactions between the Characters (especially given the fact that there is a film about someone who refuses the decisions in her life). Aniston will not win any prizes for this, but they certainly have their roles more depth than a typical romantic comedy heroine, Costner and Ruffalo are both in fine form, and MacLaine is often just enough to introduce some delightfully prickly personality in a film, Often that is located on the edge of too much niceness. Also with Richard Jenkins (Six Feet Under) and Mena Suvari (American Beauty). - Bret Fetzer
